duniya
(dune-ee-yah)
o species type: offensive
o average lifespan: 30-100 millenium
o physical description:
A smaller, scaled dragon with a typically lean build, bony plating on its underbelly and no wings. Most have a crest running 1/4 of the way down their backs. They typically range in color from completely black to black with cobalt, silver, gold, or copper markings that, due to bio-luminescence glow in the dark. They have heavy, typically rounded ram horns and pits lining their muzzle to help them hunt in the dark. Bonelike spines protrude from their cheeks like crests, and line the last foot or so of their thin tails. Membranes connect their elbows to their ribcage, allowing them to glide short distances. Their pupils are vertical slits that can expand 130-fold in low light. They're not tanks, but their build means they're very efficient fighters and solitary hunters.
o diet: carnivorous
o mode of reproduction: oviparous
o abilities:
- shapeshifting: Duniya are excellent shapeshifters, though they can't shift into anything with more matter than they already own. They can maintain their shifted forms almost indefinitely, though they tend to consume more food in their shifted state. This makes them great at multiple things, such as locating and herding prey, and it's common for families with grudges to hire them to spy on their enemies.
- venom: One bite from a Duniya in it's un-shifted form can prove fatal for most prey animals if that duniya is using its venom ability, though it can cause extreme illness in larger dragons that can potentially lead to vomiting, loss of appetite, lack of balance and dehydration. They have normal, solid teeth, indicating this is a magical ability and not a physical adaptation. The recharge for duniya venom is four days, sometimes more if the user was injured when they expended their reserves.
- gravity manipulation: Much like the araceli, the duniya are capable of moving things without touching them, but they can only increase or decrease the gravity on an item or entity. This is a pretty short-lived ability; there have been no instances of duniya flinging other dragons into space, just using it to pin prey or assist the araceli in building.
o biological abilities: Duniya are bioluminescent and can withstand nearly crushing underground pressure and the incredibly high heat that comes with living underground.
o reproductive cycle: Duniya tend to be polyamorous, though the duniyas that lay eggs usually form tribes and incubate, then raise their offspring together shortly after breeding. They usually lay small clutches with 1-4 eggs. Their eggs hatch quickly, but their young are dependent for the first quarter of a century of their lives, so they stick with whoever they happened to imprint on upon birth (typically the parent that laid them). They reach maturity after two centuries.
