"Would you destroy something p e r f e c t
in order to make it b e a u t i f u l?"
[smear:BA62D9]➣ Eons ago, before NiniViede was even an idea, the planet was roamed by a mighty black dragon who came to be known as Bolor'ma in the years following her birth. She hatched alone, and grew to be of colossal size within a few centuries, towering over the land she found herself in and, eventually, growing bored of her solitude.
➣ Bolor'ma discovered the first form of magic when she became especially lonely one day, forming a miniature version of a dragon out of earth and mud and managing to animate it. From there she perfected the skill, at first just making replicas of herself but eventually breathing life into entirely different species, creating flesh-and-blood creatures instead of mud and giving them wings and horns, fur and feathers, and everything they would need to survive in the world they found themselves in.
➣ Years passed, and Bolor'ma took pride in her "children," discovering more magic alongside them and teaching them about the land. She animated the prey they would need to sustain themselves on, and she oftentimes shape-shifted down for as long as her body would allow her to hunt with her offspring. All was peaceful and prosperous in the world back then.
➣ That is, until Nynn was born. Nynn was the daughter of two even-tempered drakes, but you would not have guessed it from how cruel and selfish the hatchling was. She was a liar and manipulator from the time she took her first breath, and she took pleasure in killing anything smaller than she was. Her parents, blessed with Bolor'ma's big heart, dutifully promised to love their offspring anyways, and they tried to turn a blind eye to her flaws, hoping she would grow out of it as she grew older.
➣ Unfortunately, she did not. She recruited other young dragons in a "guild" she created, promising adventure to them but oftentimes just humiliating them or making them steal or lie for her to prove their worth. Pretty soon, Bolor'ma caught on, and she was thoroughly shocked; she found it difficult to believe her species, the species she had modeled after herself, could ever be so greedy and full of hatred. She took the hesitant Nynn under her wing to mentor, hoping she could set her straight.
➣ As expected, Nynn was unhappy with the arrangement. She pretended to change, of course, to try and throw Bolor'ma off, hoping the Matriarch would free her. Bolor'ma was smarter than that, though, and soon Nynn grew resentful and began testing the older drake's patience. She deliberately disobeyed her, sneaking out late in the evening and picking fights, purposefully trying to anger her mentor. With Bolor'ma's nearly endless patience, Nynn felt as if she'd never piss her off.
➣ Until the day Nynn killed a fellow dragon, Bolor'ma thought she could forgive all her transgressions. The anger, hurt and confusion that filled the dark drake were unbearable; she rushed to Nynn's parents and told them her daughter was a danger to others, that she needed to be put to death. Bolor'ma couldn't resurrect her lost child, not without giving herself up in their place; what happened was irreversible, but they could prevent it from happening again.
➣ Nynn's parents knew their daughter was dangerous but still found it nearly impossible to hate her; she was their flesh and blood, and they had made a vow to love her unconditionally before she was even born. They promised Bolor'ma they would put their daughter down, only to hide her in their den until that evening, when Bolor'ma was asleep. Nynn couldn't live while Bolor'ma was around, and their opinion on the matter was obvious. So that night they left with Nynn and, upon finding the Matriarch asleep in a field, used their combined power to trap her in Nynn's father's shield, the amount of energy put into the act killing her mother from exhaustion. Nynn's father grieved over her while his daughter buried the shield, covering it in earth and rocks in the same field.
➣ Of course, her absence was noticed. Nobody witnessed Bolor'ma dissapear, but suspicion already surrounded Nynn as everyone knew her, at least indirectly. Plots to kill the cruel dragon began to surface, and Nynn knew she needed to act fast. Early one morning, before the sun had even risen, Nynn went out to where she'd buried Bolor'ma and drew the shield from the earth. She had heard rumors of magic that allowed a dragon to draw energy from another and intended to try it, knowing it would be a bit easier with how Bolor'ma was trapped. Nynn was successful, and, in her enthusiasm, she planned to weaken the rest of her kin's abilities, knowing they couldn't execute her if she was the only one with magical characteristics. Halfway through the spell, she was interrupted by an incredibly angry Bolor'ma - she had, eventually, discovered what Nynn had done to her, and she wasn't happy.
➣ She dragged Nynn into the shield in her attempts to escape, causing the spell to become jumbled; instead of depleting the existing dragons of their abilities, she took most of them, leaving each dragon with a random number of abilities, but none with the amount they used to have. Nynn and Bolor'ma were trapped together now, stuck in the shield together with nobody but Nynn's father as a witness; even then, when Nynn disappeared, he had no indication as to where she went.
➣ Eons flew by and the shield was never found; several like it existed in NiniViede, so nobody had any indication that their Matriarch and the cruel Nynn were trapped in one in particular. Bolor'ma was never forgotten, but memories of her degraded with every new generation. Nynn has living relatives; her father went on to mate again, and she had siblings that lived on, but the gene pool is so diluted by now it is insignificant.
➣ A few hundred millennia ago, the land was finally given its title, NiniViede. Clans began to become less common, and tribes were more popular. Tales of Bolor'ma and Nynn became regarded as myth, as the generations that knew them personally died long ago. Some communities now regard Bolor'ma as a god, and have started religions for her; others did the same for Nynn. Life in NiniViede has settled down significantly over the years.
➣ Until recently. [/smear:000000]
